GL Posting Rules
Every transaction posts two lines that must balance: one account is debited, another is credited. This is where you say which two. A fee you charge an owner debits their expense account and credits your income account — no bank involved. Rent debits the bank and credits rent income. Change a rule and the journal re-derives; nothing is corrupted.

Each side can be a fixed account, the bank account (the property's operating or trust account — set on Bank Accounts), or the account on the payment (used where each bill or adjustment carries its own account).
A rule describes a positive amount; a negative amount of the same type posts the mirror image, shown per row below.
